Fall Semester Philanthropy
Every semester our sisters strive to do the best they can in helping other individuals, organizations, and the environment around them. Not only did we raise money for our associate organization, the Canadian Alzheimer’s Society, but also for Daybreak Housing, UNICEF, the Great Canadian Legion, Do It For Daron and research organizations concerning women’s cancer.
Our car wash in September during recruitment was a huge success and we raked in over $400 for Daybreak Housing while having hilarious times in the Carleton Athletics parking lot. During that period we also held the AID’s walk with Kappa Sigma fraternity as well as put together and handed out AID’s packages in the Carleton Atrium composed of a packet of gum, a ribbon and a condom to promote disease awareness.
During the pledging period our baby swans took on a philanthropy of their own, raising funds for the Do It For Daron program. From the Carleton Atrium and various pubs they sold bracelets, T-shirts and toques, specially ordered in for the cause raising over $2,500 ! Unreal proud of these girls – way to make a difference!
In October, just after halloween weekend, a bunch of us got to re-live our childhood and go trick-or-treating! We hopped around door to door collecting donations for UNICEF, as well as the candy which people seemed oddly eager to get rid of…
In the days leading up to remembrance day our sisters and pledge class got together with the brothers and pledge class of Sigma Pi fraternity to sell poppies in the Carleton Atrium for the Great Canadian Legion, helping others remember and appreciate the veterans that came before us. Before day #1 of poppy selling was through, more change containers had to be brought in because our initial 10 were over flowing. The next day even more packages had to be brought in and also the next. Lest we forget.
Later on throughout November, we had 2 successful pub nights. On the 4th, Alpha Pi Phi united with 5 other Ottawa university sororities for the This One’s For the Girls pub night at the Great Canadian Cabin raising over $400 towards breast cancer research. Way to go everyone! (Cred. to Jaime Ferguson for spearheading the event and making it possible). The second pub night on the 26th was Jailbird themed and everyone had a great time dressed up in black stripey suits and orange T’s. Thanks to all those who came out and supported us!
Lastly, I would like to congratulate Keila Paul who successfully completed 231.5 hours of volunteering this semester! That’s 191.5 more than our required accomplished hours per semester! Absolutely UNREAL!!!
